Nuvo have been around for a few years now and produce great plastic instruments for any one wishing to learn.
Their latest development is the TooT and DooD, designed for small hands in mind. These starter instruments are extremely light and very durable. It has often been problem for young children to master the complex key work of a traditional clarinet. The DooD however is a solution!
A small plastic body with silicone keys, make covering the holes super easy. The mouthpiece has an attached ligature that snaps open and closed. The reed supplied by Nuvo is synthetic and has a groove that lines up on the mouthpiece, meaning you do not have to worry about positioning. You can replace the plastic reeds with traditional cane reeds (Eb clarinet reeds fit the mouthpiece), however the beauty of plastic is that they last longer and are less temperamental.
The striking design make this a great choice for all ages. The smooth plastic body is tactile and the silicone bell cover adds a nice texture to the instrument.
The colour pop is a great way to personalise your DooD. They are virtually indestructible (we have dropped a few on to a hard floor they still look perfect!) and are constructed from plastic, making them 100% waterproof. (You can even put them in the dishwasher!)
If this isn’t enough reason to love the Nuvo DooD, there are loads of online resources for you to play along with.
If you are a teacher, you can download and create ensembles with two or more parts (download here). Based on recorder fingering and pitched in C they are fully integratable into the classroom and your current recorder music can still be used. The DooD ranges a 9th from middle C to D including chromatic notes, and produces a sound similar to a clarinet but with less frequent squeaks! Music Teacher Magazine says….
